L’un et l’autre, travaillant dans les cabinets politiques de Chamberlain et d’Hitler, se retrouvent à la conférence. Ne croyant plus un mot d’Hitler, Paul convainc Hugh de lui faire rencontrer Chamberlain pour lui révéler la vraie nature des projets du Führer. Traversé de quelques moments de grande intensité, ce drame politique n’en est pas moins un peu trop lisse et sans grande audace, notamment sur le plan artistique, pour nous rester en mémoire. Pas plus qu’il ne réussit à nous faire comprendre et ressentir l’ampleur historique de ce moment. Pire encore, l’apparition ultra-programmée d’un personnage secondaire nous a permis de deviner sans trop de mal le dénouement de l’intrigue. Ce n’est jamais bon. Certes, le film est bien et les concepteurs ont coché toutes les cases pour un drame historique réussi. Mais voilà, ils les ont cochées… sans valeur ajoutée. Le personnage réel de Neville Chamberlain qu’incarne Jeremy Irons est ici assez posé, voire philosophe. À Munich, il navigue à vue, mais avec une certitude béate. Par contre, le film ne fait aucune place à Churchill, alors simple député, mais très écouté au sein du Parti conservateur, qui, à Londres, avait vertement dénoncé l’accord. Le personnage d’Hitler, incarné par Ulrich Matthes, n’est pas très convaincant. Dans le métier depuis une vingtaine d’années, le comédien George MacKay avait retenu notre attention pour son rôle du caporal Schofield dans 1917 de Sam Mendes.
